The Foundation came into being from a collection of old books, maps and pictures of mountains belonging to the famous doctor, mountaineer, C.A.I. (Italian Alpine Club) member and writer, Giovanni Angelini, which would form the basic core for a centre of Alpine studies also intended to be a support for those who live in the mountains. The Town Hall of Belluno together with the University of Padua and the Angelini family thus decided to establish the Foundation in 1991.
The Foundation is a non-profit-making body with the purpose of encouraging scientific research and cultural development regarding the mountains as a geographical, geological, naturalistic, alpine, anthropological, linguistic, artistic and economic environment and of enhancing and protecting the mountains. The purposes of the Foundation are achieved through: training courses for teachers and students in Belluno schools, for professionals and technicians on problems concerning the mountains; teaching and specialisation courses for undergraduates and postgraduates of the University of Padua, scientific research projects and congresses on issues that interest the Foundation and consequent publications (www.angelini-fondazione.it).
The Foundation works with other Italian and foreign Alpine study centres, having set up the International Mountain Network Association in 2000 (www.alpinenetwork.org). It is a network that unites and coordinates the activities regarding all main topics concerned with the mountains.
